About

Our lab's mission

To contribute to brimming the world with Inner Peace

As a means to realize that, we will spread the practice of mindfulness in a

way that is easily accessible to people living our modern day lifestyle and conduct studies and research to skillfully make that come about

We define mindfulness practice as the following:

"The practice of freeing oneself and connecting with inner peace by being aware of and kind to what is in the present moment and learning its nature."

The word "Mindfulness" has its root in the Pali term "Sati." (Its original meaning apparently has been a topic of debate. According to some this term originally meant simply "to remember," but nowadays people tend to refer it to mean "mindfulness" and/or "awareness.")

We define it as "being aware of and kind to what is in the present moment and learning its nature." When you look at the first half of the definition from a different angle, it is also essentially saying that you are letting go of your desire to control things to be a certain way. The later half is pointing to the fact that as an effect of practicing this you will learn the true nature of what is.

"Inner Peace" is not necessarily the absence of conflict, anger, remorse, guilt, greed, sadness, uncertainty, suffering, or any of the so called “negative” stuff. It is what’s found when you transcend words and concepts and truly accept and love what is in each and every moment. You are also in a sense "happy now" but not attached to that happiness and can let that go at the same time, so you are essentially "free."

May all beings be happy

The founder

Founder Shannon N. Smith

Shannon Naoki Smith was born in Tokyo, Japan to an American father and a Japanese mother in 1978. He went to an International/American School in Japan, and spent his vacations in the US from time to time. This experience exposed him to a lot of different cultures from a very early age and in turn triggered him to hold a vision of contributing in making a peaceful world where people are holding hands in love despite their differences in religion, tradition, etc. He acted on this vision, but his instincts led him into a twisted viny road where he ended up becoming a drug addict, attempting suicide and becoming a religious cult member leading a group of about a thousand members. But he eventually came out of those situations learning  invaluable lessons.

He has practiced meditation since 20 and came across mindfulness meditation at the age of 28 and has meditated for well over 5000 hours as of 2017. His vision is to see this world brimming with Inner Peace, and he both practices and teaches mindfulness as one of the means to realize that.

He is also the founder of Exciting-English, a Website and YouTube channel dedicated to teaching English to Japanese people. People also refer to him as an English teacher, a translator, an interpreter and a mentor. He gave a TEDx talk at TEDxHimi 2017.
